“Wrongs concern all; it is the business of all, or should be, to overcome them; it is the business of all, because all are affected by the operation of the law; all are interested in what affects all; what ever, therefore, wrongs a brother wrongs a brotherhood.”
— C. Hammond.
HAMMOND, REV. CHARLES, born near Rochester, New York, 1812; a spirit medium, and author of “Light from the Spirit World,” (Rochester, 1852.) A Universalist Pastor, he probably ill with the consumption that eventually ended his life, Charles Hammond shocked the entire Universalist community when he abandoned the ministry a few years later for the new Spiritualist movement. Charles Hammond died July 10, 1859 in Rochester, survived by his wife Sybil and his only daughter Seraph Hamlin.
Listening to MSNBC this morning and over the weekend, it is apparent that this cable channel is defaulting to a time in our past when elections could perhaps be analogous to some horse race,
A guest on the show mentioned the actual word “horse race” twice in his time on air most interestingly,
But this is an absurd notion, in the age of Trump and his unapologetic authoritarianism,
Although clearly the Republican Party in its current iteration is clearly defined by this media’s own reporting, and many a guest have voiced their concerns for a now extremist movement, it seems perhaps a business model demands a game of charades,
The Republicans are far from taking part in a closely watched horse race with its rules obeyed by horse and rider,
It’s much more like Buzkashi, of the riders beating other competitors with the dead goat, using every trick to prevail in the contest, with no regard to any pretense of fair play.
I migrate away from a media source which intentionally avoids reality, in some aspiration of being fair and balanced to abnormality, and with disregard to the dangers imposed by such fantasy being sold to the consumer,
Democracy is clearly a target, and will remain a target of Trump and his acolytes, of his radicalized base who are following a man off the cliff ahead, they wish us all to follow them in their suicide pact,
And yet we are back to a horse race already, on the most left leaning show widely dispersed across the land,
The mythology of the very much desired horse race is perhaps endangering us all more than would ever be admitted, we need sober truth, not a business model calling the shots, truth matters greatly especially in times of danger.
It would be helpful for many not under the Trump opium dream to report with all honesty, the dangers are already clear, they are people lost, who don’t wish to be found,
To cater to the extreme element in any manner endangers our national security, isn’t this obvious now,
For former Republicans to somehow delude themselves that the current party is not beyond repair endangers us,
To worry about partisan politics now in coverage choices now is foolhardy, as it no longer applies in this political environment,
An authoritarian movement in America cannot be assumed different from any other country, the history does not lie to us,
If this seems partisan to the Democratic Party, so be it, America democracy is at stake, not party politics, and one wishes for two sane parties, but that is extremely far from our reality,
The conservative views as it is now self exclaimed to be, are far from our conventional understanding,
The danger is not abstract any longer, the horse race analogy is painfully incorrect,
I hope that this model can be disposed of soon, credibility will increase exponentially if it comes to pass,
Wishing for normality, trying to portray 2023 as normality, involves a great disservice to everyone of us, and a corporation’s bottom line should be the least of reasons for not keeping us a democratic republic,
The morality of such action is beyond redemption,
Perhaps some day we will have horse races again, but for now let’s call it a Buzkashi contest.
